Swim Classes for Toddlers: What to Expect When Your Child Turns 2

Two year olds are busy, curious and fearless in all the ways that keep parents on their toes. They're climbing, running, copying everything you do, and more often than not, heading straight for the nearest puddle, bath or pool. That curiosity is exactly why this is such a great age for swimming lessons.
If you're thinking about swim classes for your toddler, here's what they really involve, which class suits your child's age, and how to make the first few lessons a happy experience for both of you.
Is 2 a Good Age to Start Swimming Lessons?
Yes. At AquaBuddies, babies can start from as young as 4 months, but plenty of families begin when their child is a toddler, and that's absolutely fine. At 2, children are moving more freely, following simple instructions and getting braver in the water, which gives them a great base for building real skills.
If you're still weighing up timing, our guide on when to start swimming lessons covers each stage from babies through to preschoolers.
What Happens in a Swim Class for Toddlers?
Toddler classes are a shared experience. You'll be in the pool with your child for every lesson, which helps them feel safe while they explore and try new things. Classes are kept small, with a maximum of six families, so your instructor can guide every parent and child.
Our Coogee pool is indoors and heated to 32 degrees all year round, so little ones stay warm and comfortable whatever the season.
Rather than drilling technique, toddler lessons focus on confidence, independence and early water safety skills. Depending on their level, your child will work on short independent swims, moving through the water on their own, climbing out of the pool safely, and jumping and pushing off the wall.
Which Class Is Right for My 2 Year Old?
Our toddler swimming lessons are grouped by age, so your child learns alongside others at the same stage.
Brown Ducklings (18 to 24 months): this level builds independence, with short independent swims, climbing out safely and early jumping and pushing off the wall.
Starfish (24 months and up): most 2 year olds join Starfish, where they build water confidence and independence in preparation for the next big step.
Around age 3: when your child is ready, they move from parent-accompanied lessons into either a semi-private Crabette class or a small group Crab class. Crabette has just two children per class, and parents can stay in the water at first while their child gradually gets used to swimming without them. From there, children continue into our kids swimming lessons.
How Can I Help My Toddler Enjoy Their Lessons?
It's completely normal for toddlers to feel a little unsure in their first few sessions. Our instructors are experienced with infants and toddlers and will guide you both through it, and most children settle quickly once they find their rhythm in the water.
A few simple things make a big difference. Bring swimwear for you both, towels, warm clothes for afterwards and a small snack for post-swim comfort. A swim nappy is a must for children who aren't toilet trained yet, and we recommend a disposable swim nappy with a reusable Happy Nappy over the top.
